Adapting to Globalization and Economic Challenges: The Role of HRM in the Express Courier Industry

The express courier industry has undergone significant changes due to globalization and economic challenges. From an HRM perspective, these changes have had profound implications for how companies recruit, train, and retain employees to remain competitive in the market. In this blog post, we will examine the impact of globalization and economic challenges on the express courier industry and how it has affected HRM practices.

Globalization and HRM in the express courier industry

Globalization has created new opportunities for the express courier industry to expand their services and reach new customers in different parts of the world. As a result, companies have had to recruit and train employees with the necessary language and cultural skills to work in these regions (Bastian, 2018). The industry's shift towards global operations has led to an increased focus on cross-cultural training and diversity and inclusion initiatives to ensure that employees have the necessary skills to work in diverse environments.

Additionally, globalization has led to increased competition in the industry, which has forced companies to be more efficient and cost-effective to remain competitive. Automation and digitization have become essential tools for companies to streamline their operations, reduce costs, and enhance the customer experience (Bastian, 2018). This has resulted in a shift in the nature of work and the skills required of employees.

Economic challenges and HRM in the express courier industry

The express courier industry is also subject to economic challenges, such as recessions and changes in consumer behavior. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the industry faced a surge in demand for home delivery services, which required companies to rapidly adapt their operations to meet changing consumer needs (Fernandez, 2020). At the same time, the industry faced challenges related to supply chain disruptions and reduced air cargo capacity.

To adapt to these challenges, companies had to be agile and flexible in their operations. HRM practices played a critical role in helping companies respond to these challenges. For example, companies had to quickly adjust their recruitment and training programs to ensure that employees had the necessary skills to meet changing demand patterns (Lee & Chen, 2021). Companies also had to develop new last-mile delivery solutions, such as contactless delivery and curbside pickup, to meet the changing needs of consumers (Fernandez, 2020).

Conclusion

In conclusion, the express courier industry has had to adapt and evolve to meet the challenges of globalization and economic uncertainty. From an HRM perspective, this has required companies to focus on cross-cultural training and diversity and inclusion initiatives, as well as training and development programs to ensure that employees have the necessary skills to remain competitive in the market. Additionally, the industry's response to economic challenges has highlighted the critical role of HRM practices in helping companies to be agile and flexible in their operations.

  2. The article discussed very important topic today . Another significant impact of globalization on human resource development is the necessity to consider cultural differences, both in and out of the workplace. Businesses tend to have their own corporate cultures or ways of operating, but there are societal and cultural differences between people as well. Effective leadership, managing diverse workforce, role of technology in HR functions like recruitment and selection, legal and political aspects, skill management, global mindset are some of the jostling issues encountered by human resource function in the retro of globalization.

    1. Agreed, according to Jones (2020), globalization has made businesses more diverse, which means that companies need to accommodate cultural differences to maintain a harmonious workplace. Effective leadership, managing a diverse workforce, and developing a global mindset are key factors in this regard. Technology has also played a significant role in shaping the human resource function, making HR functions more efficient and streamlined. HR managers need to stay updated with the latest technological advancements to implement them effectively without any potential negative impact on the workforce.

  3. I completely agree with the points made in this blog post regarding the impact of globalization and economic challenges on the express courier industry and its HRM practices. As noted by Bastian (2018), the shift towards global operations has required companies to recruit and train employees with cross-cultural competencies to work in diverse environments, leading to an increased focus on diversity and inclusion initiatives. This is consistent with the findings of Briscoe, Schuler, and Tarique (2012), who emphasize the importance of developing global leadership competencies to manage cross-cultural teams effectively.

Moreover, the industry's response to economic challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the critical role of HRM practices in enabling companies to be agile and flexible in their operations. As noted by Fernandez (2020), companies had to adjust their recruitment and training programs and develop new last-mile delivery solutions to meet changing consumer needs. This is consistent with the idea of "high-performance work systems" proposed by Marchington and Wilkinson (2020), which emphasize the importance of aligning HRM practices with business strategy to achieve organizational goals.

    1. Hi Hassan, absolutely, The growth of businesses expanding their operations across borders has created a significant need for fast and reliable shipping services in the express courier industry (Bose, 2018; World Economic Forum, 2019). Although some argue that globalization has brought new challenges like increased competition and pricing pressures, the benefits of globalization are considered to be more significant, including the expansion of the customer base and increased revenue growth for express courier companies (Wilson, 2020).

To be successful in the changing landscape, express courier companies need to adapt and innovate to take advantage of the opportunities presented by globalization (Bose, 2018). As the demand for fast and reliable shipping services is expected to continue to grow with businesses expanding their operations globally, companies that can successfully adapt to the challenges of globalization will be well-positioned to thrive (World Economic Forum, 2019; Bose, 2018).
